Education

Our congregation offers on-going and short-term education opportunities for all ages, from September through May, and shares in a multi-congregational Vacation Bible School during the summer.

Our congregation has provided space for the Presbyterian Pre-school for more than four decades, with more than 1,000 three- and four-year olds having been nurtured, taught, and loved over those years as they prepare for kindergarten and beyond. The Presbyterian Nursery School follows the calendar of the Pendleton School District, and meets Mondays through Fridays in the morning hours.

On Sunday mornings our congregation provides an eclectic range of study materials for adults (college age and above), frequently spending extended periods on recently-published books and current events around the world and in mission fields.

Education for younger children occurs during the 10:00 a.m. Service of Worship, with grade-level materials and lots of hands-on learning. In the 2004-2005 year we utilized the “Seasons of the Spirit ” curriculum. We also provide nursery care for infants and toddlers prior to and during the Service of Worship.

Sunday Morning Adult Christian Education – May 2008 Schedule

Sundays May 4 and May 11 -- Lectionary Bible Study - Class will meet in the Vert room from 9:00 to 9:30 am.  Please note the time change.  We will read, study and reflect on Sunday's lectionary bible verses, using resources available in our library.  Novelist John Updike said the Bible "gave me a philosophy to live and labor by, and in that way changed my life."  Join us Sunday morning to share ideas on how we can "live and labor" by this week's lectionary.

Sunday May 18 - China Emerging:  A Personal Perspective - Meet in the Vert room at 8:45 am for a PowerPoint slide show by Jolie and Peter Haug, who recently returned from a total of 11 years teaching English in northeastern China and traveling throughout much of the rest of the country.  Married for 46 years, the Haugs have three married children and ten grandchildren. The three eldest grandchildren (two aged 14 and one aged 15) spent 4.5 months in China with their grandparents last spring.  In 1993 the Haugs accepted a rare opportunity to teach English at a small,  semi-private, two-year college in Beijing . The original commitment was for one year, but that's all it took for them to fall in love with that vast, mysterious country.

The show focuses on the amazing changes that China is undergoing as it girds, not only for the 2008 Summer Olympics, but also for its emergence as one of the major players on the global stage of the 21 st century. This presentation illustrates many of the paradoxes that exist in China , e.g., traditional use of coal to supply heat and electricity and the more modern use of petroleum to fuel a burgeoning population of vehicles. Another example is the pollution throughout most of the country in contrast to modern wide streets and clean, gleaming modern architecture of some developing cities. Underlying all of this high-speed development are the people themselves, mostly warm, friendly, helpful, and a little uncertain about what it all means.  The bulk of the program aims to show a bit of what daily life is like for an American who chooses to live and work in China. The presentation is about 40 minutes long, and the Haugs welcome questions and discussion afterwards.

Sunday May 25 -- Lectionary Bible Study

Class will meet in the Vert room from 9:00 to 9:30 am.  Please note the time change.  We will read, study and reflect on Sunday's lectionary bible verses, using resources available in our library.  Novelist John Updike said the Bible "gave me a philosophy to live and labor by, and in that way changed my life."  Join us Sunday morning to share ideas on how we can "live and labor" by this week's lectionary .
